A home décor project. We’ll start out with swatches of each stitch to ensure your confidence, especially with the trickier stitches, before getting started with the project itself, in colours of your choice so you can ensure it will look stunning in your home.

All materials for the workshop will be provided in your goodie bag: quality, smooth and squishy yarn, cushion insert and pattern, along with some special woolly treats. You will need to bring your own crochet hooks (4mm or a larger or smaller size if you know your tension is usually different to others). Some people like to bring a notebook and pen to remind themselves of different techniques. You’ll be able to choose the colours of your yarn in advance from the colour chart provided after booking.

For intermediate crocheters - an interesting technique to learn the technique; a two colour Tunisian crochet cowl. All materials for the workshop will be provided in your goodie bag; learn the technique and then move on to a Spiral Cushion Cover with frill knitted in chunky yarn.

You will need to bring your own crochet hooks; 5.5mm or 6mm for workshop cowl + 6mm for cushion (or a larger/smaller size if you know your tension is usually different to others). Some people like to bring a notebook and pen.

For the cowl you’ll be able to choose the colours of your yarn in advance from the colour chart provided (nearer to the workshop event).

If you want to make the cushion it takes 6 x chunky yarn (70m/100g) + 1 x chunky yarn (possibly contrast) - you can buy yarn to make this from Belinda's undyed yarn collection or you can bring your own. Sample crocheted in Puff (superwash merino + tiny bit of nylon) and Loopy Mohair (kid mohair, wool and tiny bit of nylon).

I will also show you finishing techniques to make your bouquet look professional. Please bring your own DK yarn (must be acrylic yarn) in the colours you want your blooms and bring your own hooks in various sizes. We will be making lavender, sweet peas, tulips and carnations.

EVENT: Stars and Hexagons - crochet colour magic
Host for two day workshop: Jo Smith

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Crochet is the perfect medium for playing and experimenting with tessellating shapes to make blankets, bags, cushions etc. My absolute favourites are stars and hexagons. I’ve been making them with different stitches and colours for years and am continuously surprised and amazed by how different a simple tessellating pattern can look in different colourways.

I'll bring a glorious range of colours for you to choose from and I’ll show you different ways I’ve made the motif shapes with a range of simple stitches.

Together we’ll have fun experimenting with colours and stitches, trying different layouts, inspiring each other with our colour combinations and making joyous fabulous crochet work.

EVENT: Jeanette Sloan work on one of her designs
Host for two day workshop: Jeanette Sloan

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Colour is very important to me and my design process often begins with a search for an intriguing stitch that will inspire creative juices to flow or a decorative detail that will add a stylish, contemporary edge. I’ve worked as a freelance textile designer and tutor teaching both machine and hand knitting and as 'an accessories obsessive' have written 4 books on hand knitting. I’ve been very lucky to work with some of the best hand knitting brands in the UK and my designs have featured in several UK knitting magazines including Knitting Magazine where I am a regular contributor responsible for the ‘Ask Jeanette’ letters page, Yarn Reviews and A-Z of Techniques.

Jeanette is championing diversity and representation. She is actively bringing these vital and essential conversations to our attention.

She writes: […] there are those who will say that conversations like this are unnecessary and that bringing race or skin colour into knitting and craft is being divisive or perhaps even ‘political correctness gone mad’. To those people I would ask them to imagine not seeing themselves represented on the pages of the magazines and publications they read and thinking how that would make them feel. Unwelcome? Invisible? In some way ‘less than’?….

We are thrilled to be welcoming Jeanette to TKH.
