LEARNAWAY
March Thursday 4th – Sunday 7th
NAME OF EVENT: Project workshop - Slip Stitch Colour Work Felted Needle Case Roll
Host for Saturday workshop: Alison Crowther-Smith
Donna Bell presents a session on Colour me Beautiful + £20 for Friday afternoon
AVAILABLE: SSK

A simple slip stitch colourwork case that is then felted in the washing machine. The case is designed to fit standard length DPNs or crochet hooks. It is knitted flat using 2 shades of yarn.To participate you need basic knitting skills, and to be able to read a pattern. The colour work is fast and very straightforward. It is not Fairisle.

On this course, you also have the option of knitting one or two small squares of stocking stitch beforehand to bring along and try Shibori techniques at The Knitting Hotel to felt on the day. Shibori means to manipulate or shape the fabric before it is felted. I will also bring examples of how to felt your handknits to create beautiful bags, scarves and other accessories. One of my aims is to give you the knowledge and confidence to try felted knitting.

To knit the needle case you will need:
1 x 50g ball of Rowan Felted Tweed in shade A
1 x 50g ball of Rowan Felted Tweed in shade B – yarns A & B need to have sufficient contrast to make the colourwork viable, e.g., light and dark blue
4mm needles

I have specified Rowan Felted Tweed because I know this yarn will give me the dimensions I need when felted. You can substitute the yarn, but I cannot be sure how it will come out. If substituting, make sure you choose 100% or high wool content yarn, and that it is not machine washable/superwash. To experiment with Shibori techniques, please bring 1 or 2 squares of stocking stitch knitted in Rowan Felted Tweed, on 4mm needles, casting on 40 stitches and working until approx square. This is entirely optional but if you fancy this, I will bring marbles and thread along so you can have a go.

LEARNAWAY
April Thursday 8th – Sunday 11th
NAME OF EVENT: Mobius Knitted Cowl
Host for workshop: Alison Crowther-Smith
Donna Bell presents a session on Colour me Beautiful + £20 for Friday afternoon
AVAILABLE: M1

A real knitted Moebius is a thing of great beauty and one of the most satisfying things to knit. Once the Moebius cast on is learned, the rest is simply knitting or purling in the round.

On this course, I will teach you:
The true Moebius cast on. How to work the Moebius from cast on, to completion. How to create a simple but lovely Moebius shoulder Cowl. How to make many variations of a Moebius in the future.

To take part you really only need basic knitting skills – to be able to cast on, off, knit, and purl. These are the only skills that you will use to knit the basic Moebius I am teaching you. You also need a sense of adventure, lovely, open mind, and to be prepared to feel amazing when you add this skill to your repertoire.

You will need:
A 5mm circular needle that is 150cm long, measured from tip-to-tip. I recommend fixed cable circulars for Moebius knitting but interchangeables are also fine. A stitch marker. 2 x 50g balls of any DK yarn – plain, variegated, or mix up your shades. 1 x 25g ball of Rowan Kidsilk Haze (or similar silk/mohair yarn) – optional, one of the pattern variations has Kidsilk Haze stripes and a Kidsilk Haze ruffle at the edge.

NEW - LEARNAWAY - 1 day workshop
September Thursday 2nd – Sunday 5th
NAME OF EVENT: Star Cushion (project weekend) working in the round, with colours; a delicious design
Host for workshop: Alison Crowther-Smith
AVAILABLE: KFB, SSK, PSSO

I have designed 2 sizes of star cushions for you to create on this course. Both are knitted in Chunky Weight yarns. The cushions are knitted flat, in 2 halves and then stuffed and sewn together. The large cushion is very opulent and could be used as a floor cushion. To knit these you will be casting on/off; knitting and purling; picking up and knitting; learning how the clever but simple construction works. You need basic knitting skills only. You will have the option of making a small star-shaped decoration as a practice (swatch) as I have created a micro-version for this purpose. Optional.

Here are all the details, showing the yarns I used but any chunky yarn will be fine:
Size - Large: approx 80cm wide, point-to-point; Small: approx 37cm wide, point-to-point
Tension: 14 stitches and 16 rows to 10cm, in stocking stitch, on 7mm needles

Yarn - Large Version (2 colours): Yarn A – 3 x 100g balls of Rowan Cocoon, sh 836, Moon, or c345m of chunky yarn. Yarn B – 3 x 100g balls of Rowan Cocoon, sh 813, Seascape, or c345m of chunky yarn. Small Version: 3 x 100g balls of Rowan Cocoon, or c230m of chunky yarn
Needles: 1 pair of 7mm needles. Note: tension is important for this item and if you are a loose knitter, consider 6mm needles. For this reason, I have given my tension, above.
Other Toy stuffing – absolutely masses especially for the large version (not needed on the course). 2 buttons (not needed on the course)
To practice and make a small star (Christmas decoration size) please bring some DK yarn and 4mm needles.
